The Debate on Self Driving Cars

Updated: May 26, 2023

Henry Ford created the automobile assembly line and ever since the production of cars has skyrocketed. Cars began to be powered by gasoline and driven by people, but recently as society has technologically advanced the invention of self-driving cars has taken off. Within the United States, 29 out of the 50 states have legalized self driving cars. Within recent years driverless cars have come into question as some see them as an advantage to the environment while others argue about their safety of them.

The Pros of Self Driving Cars:

  1. More people could drive: People who are not able to drive due to a disability or other condition will have the opportunity to experience driving on their own. Likewise, it would allow these people to experience something that they have always seen or heard about from other individuals.

  2. Reduced road congestion: By having self-driving cars, it reduces the percentage of human error resulting in fewer crashes on roads. Likewise, having a robot programmed will help to reduce the number of stops you have within your car ultimately reducing traffic.

The Cons of Self Driving Cars:

  1. Fire Hazard: Within many models of self-driving cars, lithium powered batteries are present and these are known to cause metal fires if it reaches a certain temperature. In 2018, a 2012 Tesla model car was reported to be caught on fire when driving, but a collision was not present.

  2. Cyber Attack: The threat of hackers hacking a driverless car is higher than many think. In 2015, hackers took over a self-driving jeep as it was driving and forcefully made the car stop on a highway. The hackers were in control of the brakes and steering functions of the vehicle.

As you can see, there are various reasons on each side as to whether driverless cars are safe to use in today’s society. As safety is a key reason for not having them, while reduced traffic is to have them, the decision is in your hands to decide for yourself what you think on the matter.
